According to the dictionary, the word “brand” comes with a few definitions.

– kind, grade, or make, as indicated by a stamp, trademark, or the like
– a kind or variety of something distinguished by some distinctive characteristic

This brand is usually portrayed by some type of symbol, logo, name or design scheme that sets the tone for the product, company or service. These images and nuances are represented by the reputation that the brand has developed. Take any of the brands in the world, and usually there is a word or phrase associated with it.

Google – Innovation
Toyota – Reliable
Volvo – Safe

Such concepts can be applied to yourself as well. You are the service, the good and the company. And you can do all of the same things these large corporations do to manage their brands. Each year thousands of people graduate from school, many of them with similar degrees. It is through branding yourself as the best candidate that you can avoid the mosh pit that every Tom, Dick and Harry have to go through in order to land the job they want.

Your brand can be developed through a variety of different ways.  Finding a unique way to present yourself through your business cards for example. Customization turns heads, and if you stray away from the classic look you can order for free off VistaPrint, it may bring some extra attention. Developing a strong reputation among the network you have developed is also a great way to maintain your brand. People enjoy working with somebody who is trustworthy and reliable. Not only will your network help you with your professional development through feedback and communication, but they may also help you land that job. Finally, your most noticeable asset is your physical self. Find the killer outfit, look presentable and SMILE!

One of my mentors recommended looking through a book called The Law of Attraction, which describes how our appearance, actions and emotions attract or repel certain things in our lives. Who do you need to attract more than the company that you want to work at?

 

On the flipside, a brand is also:
– a mark formerly put upon criminals with a hot iron.

This should put the power of reputation and accountability into perspective. In the past, criminals were physically branded for their misdeeds. Presently it is definitely illegal to brand somebody, but the power of words and the grapevine through which they pass can be devastating. The power of your brand is something that needs to be nurtured and not neglected.
