i had the privilege of sitting down and having a coffee with a representative for Red Bull North America. Abbey Robertson is from Iowa and has had an amazing career working with companies such as Nike. She is currently at Red Bull.

one of the things that came up in our conversation was the state of the current generation. its interesting, because this was covered in the operations management course at school. it seems that the current generation of young graduates are too comfortable with what they have. they have not really had to struggle through much as their parents worked hard to provide for them. needless to say, even in their 20’s, these kids have their parents running around taking care of their problems.

the term “helicopter parents” came to light. when there’s a problem, these parents fly over, hover around till the problem is solved, and then leave. unfortunately, this is very true. i’ve heard coaches complaining about parents of their players who call and complain about their children not playing. in a competitive program i may add. it’s really sad that people can’t deal with the fact that they have to deal with their own problems for once.

if you ever have any trouble, see if you can solve it yourself before calling in reinforcements. your parents will always be there to help no matter what, so you know you can count on them IF you really need the help.
